Mike Morton is best known for his photography work
in the British press. He's been published in Melody Maker,
Smash Hits, and The Times, as well as Rockin On
in Japan.
Mike began photographing musicians and performers
at the age of 16, including Eurythmics, Culture Club, Marc Almond,
Divine, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Depeche Mode, Bauhaus, and The
Cure. He moved to London at age 18 to pursue a professional career,
working closely with Divine, Bronski Beat, Strawberry Switchblade,
and Sigue Sigue Sputnik who first put Mike's photos on their record
sleeves.
After working for Melody Maker and Sky TV (around
1986), he photographed hundreds more artists, among them Debbie
Harry, Billy Idol, Alice Cooper, Rod Stewart, Bryan Ferry, and Erasure
and Oasis (who both covered Blondie songs).
Mike was brought up on the Isle of Wight and attended
his first gig, the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, at age 5. He first
heard Blondie in 1977 on Radio Luxembourg and first saw them perform
on his 13th birthday, September 10, 1978 at Portsmouth Guildhall.
More of Mike's work can be seen on Dreamland, a site
devoted to the life and work of filmmaker John Waters. (http://www.dreamlandnews.com/morton/index.html)
